A Holistic Look at Strategic Management

One strategy quickly follows another. One strategic project follows the next one, when the first project has really just started and is not completed by a long shot. Aren’t we doing too much of a good thing here? What are «must haves» what are just «nice to haves»? What’s important here is right dosage of new strategic approaches. Scholars and practical management offer a lot of insight. We show you each approach, how important they are and how they have proven themselves in real business situations.

Recognizing a Need for Action regarding Strategy

Change is a given. It forces management to constantly check their strategic baseline. Changes need to be anticipated promptly and dangers to the business have to be recognized. During this process, new opportunities will become apparent and should be capitalized on. That’s why it’s important for decision-makers like you to be able to change your strategic baseline.

Classic Competitive Strategies

For positioning a company in its competitive environment there are numerous empirical studies and analytic tools available to you. Strategic management teaches you how to achieve the economics of scale, what advantages cost-leadership and differentiation offer, or how you can evaluate your business activities using portfolio techniques. These are your basic tools for good strategy.

Growth Based on Core Competencies

Established companies have an enormous advantage over new start-ups. They have important abilities and competences, for instance, acquired over years. These are often seen, however, as an inherited burden that limits a company’s ability to change. Numerous examples prove that core competencies when understood correctly can be used when moving into new industries.

Market-Driven Strategies, Market-Driving Strategies

Companies can employ market research, customer-relation management  and other tools to be closer to their customers and yet not really be customer-focused. As part of this course, we will teach you how companies can become true customer-driven organizations how customer proximity can translate into profitability. These days, however, there are socalled “nightmare competitors” in many industries who do not play by the rules of their industry. Does your industry offer potential for revolutionary approaches to business? How can you systematically derive such approaches? As part of the block Market-Driving Strategy, strategy is conducted at the highest levels, because when you’re dealing with established mindsets, standard recipes can be of no help. Participants learn to creatively develop the “unthinkable.”

The Inherent Profit Drivers of a Business Model

Calculating profit based on costs plus margin is banal. More interesting is to align margins to created benefits. Classic business cases often obscure the profit consistency of a business model. This course teaches you how identify and use the relevant profit drivers.

Implementing Strategy, Managing Change

The implementation of new strategies requires you to orient yourself on key performance indicators combined with an efficient implementation system. Just as important is that employees be convinced that a change makes sense, that you identify barriers to implementation early, and that the hearts of all involved are reached.
